The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in utilizing video review systems.
Video review systems are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Athletes will gain the right to question particular rulings from the official, mirroring the practice currently in place at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.
This innovation will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.
This development arrives only a season following the All England Club rolled out ELC, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line officials.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, including:
- If a ball has double-bounced.
- If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
- Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a point.
Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a player can request.
A Recent Example
A recent incident occurred in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.
Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.
Growing Trend
This technology are not new for Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open this year.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at all of its tournaments.
Other Changes
A further innovation at Wimbledon this year involves the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses situations where fans have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was in or out.
Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
